Inside the cave, the Theotokos (Mother of God) is depicted with Joseph, kneeling on either side of the Infant; behind the Infant are two oxen and above them a star; behind Joseph is a shepherd. Outside and behind the cave is a natural landscape with mountains, forest, a city, and a shepherd with sheep. In the sky, two angels on a cloud hold a scroll with the inscription: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.” From the cloud, which parts in two, light streams towards the cave.
